"I have always tried to come up with original work — that somehow strikes a strong emotional chord with the people that will use it."
Jake Phipps is a British designer who graduated from John Makepeace’s Furniture Design School at Parnham College in 1999.
In 2005, he set up his own studio in London and began designing production pieces for a wide range of European manufacturers including Gebruder Thonet, Riva, Innermost, and Casamania.
Since 2010, Jake has specialised in designing and making his own unique and highly engineered pieces to order. His award-winning work is often characterized by energetic and elegant metallic forms that are not only purposeful but exude a luxurious and precious quality to them.
His work is characterized by a narrative yet functional aesthetic full of character and with a playful design elegance that aims to “strike a strong emotional chord” with its users.
Working with Innermost, Jake designed the popular Jeeves and Wooster top-hat lamps, which were inspired by the work of René Magritte and designed as a playful take on lighting and cultural identity.
“Jeeves and Wooster are a blend of Great British tradition and modern technology, hand-made wool felt hats are lined with an aluminium inner shell, ” states the Innermost website. “They are named after P. G. Wodehouse’s two iconic characters. Wooster, the jovial but empty-headed young gentleman, and Jeeves, his improbably well-informed and talented valet. ”
