Nature Inspired Suspension Lights
What is a suspension light?
Suspension lights are also sometimes referred to as pendant lights, and when dressed up in ornate fashion with a multitude of branches, as chandeliers. These suspended light fixtures are the luminaries that like to take centre stage, commanding attention by breaking the sight lines in any environment. They are always installed on the ceiling and hang from a cord, wire, rope, rod, or chain like a jewellery accent to accessorize the outfit that is the decor in the room.
Pendant fixtures are available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, styles, colours, and materials inspired by various eras in design; think rustic, industrial, farmhouse, or traditional for décor style, and modern, mid-century, or contemporary for era. Suspension lights are most often placed above a kitchen or dining room table, kitchen island, foyer, or staircase surround, but they also look elegant in bedrooms, over side tables, or next to vanities in powder rooms.

LightForm's suspension lighting portfolio includes some of the most iconic and innovative brands from around the world. With so much variety in the selection of these show-stopping centrepieces, choosing the right fit for your space may be a challenge. The following list represents groups of stylish pendant lighting offerings through LightForm's website, with an example of a fixture, designer and/or brand as reference for inspiration.
Chandeliers - These ornamental suspended luminaires often exude a sense of luxury and have evolved far beyond the iconic metal and crystal or glass varieties suspended over dining room tables of yesteryear. For a contemporary interpretation of a chandelier, Brothers Dressler offers Canadian-inspired design as characterized through the use of reclaimed wood and small batch production.
Globe Pendants - The spherical diffuser provides an abundance of illumination, making this fixture a practical choice in high traffic spaces such as kitchens, hallways and foyers. Resembling celestial bodies, their form provides a sense of calm to a residence. Look to brands like Flos, who offer stylish, upscale lighting for globe pendants.
Drum Pendants - Named after the instrument they resemble, their form is restrained and minimal. They often have a diffuser underneath to avoid causing any glare. The Boon Round Suspension Lamp, designed by Piet Boon for Moooi is an exemplary classic drum pendant that appears deceptively simple. Its stature adds versatility to residential, office, and commercial environments through both form and function.
Mini Pendants - Presenting a wonderful opportunity to brighten up dark corners, or liven up smaller spaces, mini-pendants are effective in drawing attention despite their small stature. They are suitable for balancing out busier décor. Consider mini-pendants an accessible accessory for the home or office. Original BTC offers a selection of eye-catching mini pendants.
Dome Pendants - These suspension lights straddle the line between casual and formal lighting, with a dome-shaped lampshade that offers a broad wash of illumination. The PostKrisi 49 Suspension lamp by Enzo Catellani for Catellani & Smith blends the casual exterior of a white moulded fibreglass exterior with the magical luxury of a gilded gold or silver interior.
Multi-Light Pendants - Multi-Light Pendants provide substance en masse in a modern lighting package. Like a cluster, they feature two or more pendants suspended in a linear or cluster configuration from a single canopy or track structure. Slamp is an incredibly innovative brand that features an array of striking multi-pendant fixtures, such as the Veli Mini Quartet Couture Suspension light.
Linear Suspensions - Most often found running in a straight line with luminaires that may provide up, down, or both up/down lighting, linear suspension lights work extremely well over rectangular kitchen counters, dining rooms, or boardroom tables. The Carbon 05 Suspension light from Tokio is a good example of a linear suspension light that merges an attractive organic shape with excellent performance.
Exposed Light Bulbs - Tala specializes in the exposed light bulb aesthetic, elevating it to an art form. Their industrial lighting fixtures are designed to emulate the warmth and character of traditional Edison incandescent bulbs, while employing the energy-efficiency of an LED source. The result is light fixtures that provide a sense of retro nostalgia with sustainability.
