Enzo Catellani
"A large part of my production is made up by pieces that require a great amount of craftsmanship: it’s the hand of the craftsman that builds them, his manual work that creates the imperfection, making a truly unique object.”
“We create our light”, plainly states the Catellani & Smith website, a renowned lighting company founded designer Enzo Catellani and blacksmith Logan Smith, known for its careful and unique craftsmanship.
Born in 1950, Enzo Catellani lives in Bergamo. During the 1980s, he began the limited-series production of his lamp designs, which he sold through his own shop. In 1989, the lamps attracted the attention of Düsseldorf-based distributors Renate and Peter Meese, who presented them at the Ambiente expo in Frankfurt, where they were rapturously received.
That same year, he set up the Catellani & Smith company, which — thanks to a combination of creativity and determination, and the input of an excellent team — led to prestigious successes both in Europe and around the world. The company’s unique production system and the particular nature of their facilities have made Castellani & Smith a favourite of designers and clients worldwide.
“When I create a lamp, I always start off with a prototype, ” Enzo explains. “My laboratory is a workshop where I continually accumulate materials, components, and objects of all different kinds; and this is where everything was born. . . I assemble, weld, bend, shape. . . I need to feel the materials, to see how they play with light.
“I believe that this process can be felt in products by Catellani & Smith. A large part of my production is made up by pieces that require a great amount of craftsmanship: it’s the hand of the craftsman that builds them, his manual work that creates the imperfection, making a truly unique object. ”
