Zanini de Zanine
“Light evokes a space’s atmosphere.”
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1978, industrial designer Zanini de Zanine grew up watching his father — the renowned artist José Zanine Caldas, who specialized in sculpture and product design. Zanini’s approach to design draws upon his father’s legacy of creating masterfully designed pieces characterized by ingenuity and originality, while becoming a recognized craftsman in his own right.
He graduated in Industrial Design in 2002, and shortly later produced the “Reclaimed Woods – Limited Editions”, a series of hand-made, solid wood furnishings using recovered materials from old houses. In 2004, Zanini shifted his career towards industrial production, specializing in the use of new materials in addition to wood, such as plastic, methacrylate, and metal. In 2011, he founded Studio Zanini, and established its headquarters in a large, restored industrial building in Rio de Janiero.
In 2013, he began to collaborate with Italian company Slamp, designing the suspension lamp Flora: “Reference to the floral world is dominant in the Flora Gold, Silver and Copper collections of the Brazilian designer Zanini de Zanine, consisting of 2 suspensions and a new ground version with thin pillars similar to stems, ” states the Slamp website. “60 metallic petals similar to those of the plant Monstera Deliciosa bright embrace the satin light diffuser, shaping a bud that has just opened. The glossy finish of the petals creates sophisticated glows in a game of reflections that convey the effect of the sun at its zenith on a field of ripe wheat. ”
Zanini has since collected a some of the most important Brazilian and international design awards, including the IF Award.
