"The best advice I received as a student was to observe everything around us – real things and situations – more acutely. I think inspiration can be found in everything around us: personal experiences, travels, objects."
Spanish-born designer Vicente García Jiménez has studied textures, colors, light, and shadow throughout his life.
Born in Valencia, Vicente studied Technical Engineering, specialising in Industrial Design at the Faculty of Experimental Sciences of Castellon de la Plana. After graduating, he moved to Barcelona, where he began work with Spanish design firm Santa & Cole. He later moved to Udine, Italy, where he developed a new line of lighting fixtures for Italian manufacturer Karboxx. In 2005, he became art director for the Spanish lighting company Fambuena.
In 2012, together with his wife and fellow designer Cinzia Cumini, Vincente established Studio García Cumini Associati in Udine, Italy. Inspired by the philosophy of ‘Slow Design’, Studio Garcia Cumini “constantly pursues the balance of function and also the balance of [an] object’s soul… blending art with technology to make every project, space, and experience truly unique. ”
Together, Vicente and Cinzia are known for the use of ceramics in their designs: “What makes ceramics interesting as a material for us is the way in which light reflects on stoneware, ” they explain. “It is therefore important for development work in ceramic coverings to concentrate increasingly on the textures of materials, to accentuate the play of light on the surfaces. ”
Studio Garcia Cumini has collaborated with companies such as Agape, Cesar, Fambuena, Foscarini, Future Concept Lab, Lunardelli, Poltrona Frau, Sofia Doors, and Verzelloni.
