"I am just addicted to design. I just keep on designing every day, 24 hours a day."
nendo is a prolific, Tokyo-based design studio founded and led by Oki Sato. Known for their unique, simple, and often colorful designs, each of which possess a friendly warmth of character, the studio churns out dozens of new products every year. Indeed, nendo produced over 100 products in 2015 alone.
“There are so many small ”!” moments hidden in our everyday, ” nendo’s website states. “But we believe these small ”!” moments are what make our days so interesting, so rich… We’d like the people who’ve encountered nendo’s designs to feel these small ”!” moments intuitively. ”
Oki was born in Toronto in 1977, and studied architecture at the Waseda University in Tokyo. nendo’s Tokyo office was opened in 2002. It’s Milan office was established in 2005. nendo currently employs about 30 designers, and is supported by several interns.
Over the past decade, nendo has worked with a long list of clients — such as Cappellini, De Padova, Kartell, Foscarini, Boffi, and Driade — and has amassed an impressive number of international design awards. nendo’s collections have been exhibited in prestigious museums around the world.
"I could not have done so many projects in one year without my 3D printers, " Oki says, explaining how 3D printers enable him to create quick prototypes overnight that he can send to clients around the world. "I think it is really changing the way designers work. "
Today, nendo is broadening its scope to encompass branding, advertising and TV commercials, and architecture.
