Matteo Ugolini
“To me, design is an idea that you carry out in the most beautiful way you can.
A man of few words, Matteo Ugolini instead expresses himself through his designs. As a child, Ugolini planned a simple, rustic life. At the same time, it was always clear to him that art and adventure were essential parts of his being. We are fortunate that it was these latter qualities that directed him on this path through university and ultimately to the positions of creative and art director at Karman in 2008.
Although it is impossible to create in a total vacuum, Ugolini rejects the influences of other artists, instead focusing on his own creative impulses and using his art to explain the world to himself, and himself to the world. Ugolini derives his inspiration from life, allowing everything he experiences to flow through him and into his work, not committing to any field or theme.
Inspired by the moon, Ugolini created the gorgeous Ululí Ululá collection. From a dog he happened to see in the streets of Amsterdam came the wall lamp that shares the city’s name. The tales of Scheherazade, through the mind’s eye of Matteo Ugolini, became the Alì E Babà Collection. From simple reflections on endings and memory came the lyrical Au Revoir.
Matteo Ugolini finds inspiration in all things, and expresses that inspiration with a diversity to match.
