For Jorge Pensi, inspired designs are found in the relationship between two seemingly disparate concepts: poetry and realism. Taken by the description of his 2006 kitchen design for Poggenpohl as an “excellent exercise in poetry and realism,” Pensi took the concept to heart, treating it as an almost elemental force within each of his designs.
This should surprise no one familiar with Pensi’s designs, as the concept was already there, just waiting for the words to express it.
Primarily an architect, Jorge Pensi was educated at the University of Buenos Aires before moving to Barcelona and founding the Grupo Berenguer with Alberto Liévore, Oriol Pibernat, and Norberto Chaves. Liévore and Pensi would work together in the Barcelona studio until 1984, when Pensi moved on to found Jorge Pensi Design Studio in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona.
Upon opening Jorge Pensi Design Studio, Pensi entered a collaboration with lighting manufacturer B.lux, launching (with other designers) the beginning of B.lux’s line of decorative lighting, notably the Aura, Olympia, and the iconic Regina collections, which helped solidify B.lux’s new endeavour and marked a turning point in the company’s history.
Three decades and many awards later, Pensi’s designs continue to be popular entries in the B.lux catalogue, and Jorge Pensi Design Studio continues to be an ingenious voice in the design world. There, working closely with his team, he continues to blend poetry and realism in timeless designs that endure in spite of changing tastes and fashions.
