Remembered through a drab and desolate filter, East Berlin has never been known to nurture the creative heart. German designer Jette Scheib was born in East Berlin in 1977, in a small pocket of artistry nestled deep within the regime. Scheib’s mother is a costume and stage designer and her father Hans Scheib an artist, now internationally renowned for his stylised, sculptural works.
Jette Scheib studied industrial design at the University of the Arts, Berlin (UdK), and has worked since 2005 as an independent product designer specializing in home accessories. Her work can be plain and pure or narrative and playful, but often features a little twist that adds a new context or dimension to a functional object.
Inspiration is everywhere, Jette believes. Art, music, people and their stories, habits, clichés, or simply life itself — these all feed her creativity. “Aside from roots, everything has an influence on the creative process. You grab things with your senses and it keeps working on your brain without you even knowing, ” she explains.
Recently, Jette collaborated with Innermost to produce the unique Membrane lamp:
“Membrane’s smokey hand-blown glass body seems to cool and harden at the precise moment bulb and shade become one, forever encapsulating light sources, ” states the Innermost website. “Details such as a gentle gradient in smoky glass coupled with polished gunmetal fittings result in a sophisticated design well suited to upscale interiors. ”
She lives and works in Berlin.
