Fort Standard
"All of our products are born out of an exciting and constructive conversation between two minds." — Ian Collings
Fort Standard is a New York based contemporary design studio founded by Gregory Buntain and Ian Collings. Their collaborative work is a manifestation of their shared vision and progressive design approach, which pairs timeless materials with modern process.
Having studied Industrial Design together at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, Gregory and Ian became close friends when they were selected to study product design at the Bauhaus University in Weimar Germany for a semester. Graduating in 2008, Buntain and Collings continued to hone their design and furniture making skills before founding Fort Standard in 2011.
Often using traditional methods of production in innovative ways, the designers have developed a unique form language rooted in simplicity and functionality. Their attention to detail, connections and materiality generate value through design in what Gregory and Ian describe as a “warm-contemporary” aesthetic.
Fort Standard’s new collection, entitled “Qualities of Material”, further explores the experimental dimension of the duo’s process by pushing natural materials beyond conventional limits and applications. The collection investigates the properties of wood, stone and leather by employing specific material characteristics to create structural designs in the context of furniture.
“Materials and design directions are correlated. One always informs the other, ” explains Ian. “What we concern ourselves with is the best material for the application and what are the potentials/dominate characteristics of this material – both often lead us to allowing materials to act in honest relation to each other or to the function of the object. ”
