Dounia Tamri-Loeper
"When I first started this journey, it was never about making a product cheap or quick... it was about doing what I love to do and helping people along the way."
Entrepreneur, artist, designer, wife and mother, Dounia Tamri-Loeper honours who she is and where she came from with every designer lighting creation she envisions. When she first thought of creating her own designer creations, she knew that she wanted to draw on the rich cultural, artistic, and artisanal traditions of Morocco, but not how. Trusting in herself to find that 'how' along the way, Tamri-Loeper set out on a tour of Morocco to reconnect with her homeland's style and craftsmanship.
Building on her B.Sc. in Design from Drexel University in Pennsylvania and five years of experience at Michael Graves Architecture & Design in New Jersey--as well as her childhood growing up in Morocco in a family of artists and entrepreneurs--Dounia Tamri-Loeper saw her future in the intricate metalwork common to Moroccan art and design, and the ways in which it interacted with light. She founded Dounia Home to design and market designer lighting in 2015, and knew she was on to something when her first designs drew attention at the 2016 New York Now design show.
From her family's home in the United States, Dounia Tamri-Loeper designs every Dounia Home designer light, then works closely--though often digitally--with her staff in Marakech, Morocco, to refine prototypes before her teams of well-paid artisans begin to hand-craft every intricate shade.
