Arturo Alvarez
"The space and its lighting have to speak the same language, creating a harmonic relationship in which both, lighting and space, influence and complement each other in an elegant way."
Variously called an artist, designer, craftsman, and innovator, Arturo Álvarez prefers to think of himself as a creator. Álvarez’s predilection for drawing on the natural world and reshaping it to express himself manifested early, as he designed and built his own toys from natural objects as a child. Artistic influences abounded as he grew, with Art Deco, Art Nouveau, and Bauhaus all influencing him and his work. By the time Álvarez—together with his wife, Patricia—founded a design studio in 1994, however, the core of his work was almost entirely based in emotion, rather than style—hence the studio name "a-emotional light". Drawn to figurative forms and abstraction, Arturo Álvarez’s subjects have also evolved over time. Beginning with natural themes, he found the human form—particularly the feminine form—increasingly depicted in his lighting creations and art. Most recently, he entered a period concerned with new expressions and language, focusing on the relationships between people as their subject. His boundless curiosity and drive have also made Álvarez a driving force in media innovation, with over two years of research going into the creation of SIMETECH®, a silicone and steel mesh that forms the basis of the Coral family of lamps, among others. From pressed cellulose of the Li collection to the single coated steel wire of the Pili, Álvarez’s creativity is as well-represented in materials as in form. Having recently rebranded his company as a by arturo álvarez, the award-winning creator continues to design, innovate, and create works that are as human as they are ethereal.
