Arihiro Miyake
"For me, the only way to justify further production, materialization, and consumption is to seek the future. I would like to create something which leads us to tomorrow, which makes us dream about tomorrow’s life."
Born in Kobe, Japan in 1975, Arihiro Miyake studied industrial design at the Kobe Design University before moving to Finland, where he attained a Master’s degree in furniture and spatial design from the University of Art and Design in Helsinki.
He began his career as an interior designer, developing restaurant concepts for a Japanese company. He then worked as an product designer for the Finnish companies Ilkka Suppanen and Yrio Wiherheimo. In 2004, he established the independent Studio Arihiro Miyake.
Based in Helsinki, Studio Arihiro Miyake works widely in the field of design on projects ranging from interior and product design to research projects. “We design new experiences by taking a fresh look at things we live with, ” states the studio’s website.
Notable projects by the studio include the modern French restaurant Tooth Tooth in Tokyo, the Helsinki Bakery in Osaka, and the marimekko shop in Helsinki. He has also produced furniture for the Belgian company TM and lighting for Moooi, for which he designed the stunning Coppélia chandelier.
“The Coppelia Ballerina traces, with sinuous movements, a delicate after-image in the air, which inspires the fluid motion in the design of Miyake’s Coppelia Suspended Lamp, ” states the Moooi website. “The graceful dance, staged by the three-dimensionally crossed wire structure, leads the spectator to dozens of glowing LED lights, which define the contour and the magical glow of Miyake's new interpretation of a classic chandelier. ”
Arihiro is also a teacher at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, and a member of the Japan Finland Design Association.
