John Beck
"Steel on its own needs nothing else. It is what it is."
With industrial and lighting designer John Beck, what you see is what you get. A native of Fairview Heights, Illinois, Beck began his road to design with a job at his uncle's welding supply shop after high school. Beck developed his welding skills doing small custom projects for customers, as well as his own dabbling and experiments in his own time. Realizing that he had the skills to reproduce al bedframe he saw in a catalogue, his interests turned to creating steel furniture in his free time as he studied graphic design at college and worked nights as a welding supply salesman. Finding that his greatest joy was in industrial design rather than graphic design, John Beck started what would become John Beck Steel in a workshop in the backroom of a Blend, a furniture store he opened with his sister-in-law in 2004. After three years, Beck's welded steel furniture and lighting designs had begun to take off following appearances at New York's ICFF. Closing the store, John Beck Steele became its own brand with its own workshop, from which John Beck individually hand-crafts every refined industrial steel design to be–much like their designer–simple, forthright, and intriguing.
