Designer Ingo Maurer
"The basis of lighting design is the lightbulb. Certainly there are other means today and I find them wonderful and fascinating. The beautiful technique of glass, the symbiosis and the poetry… it’s wonderful." - Ingo Maurer
Ingo Maurer, a German designer widely recognized as the 'poet of light,' carved a niche in the interior design industry with his pragmatic yet artful approach to lighting. Known for his functional yet visually striking lamps, Maurer's early work, such as the 1966 design Bulb, showcased a fusion of reductive forms, Pop art, and a touch of 1960s pop culture.
Born on the island of Reichenau in Southern Germany, Maurer started as a newspaper apprentice before venturing to the United States in 1960. Working as a graphic designer for IBM in New York and California, he later returned to Germany in 1963 with his then-wife, designer Dorothee Becker. This period marked Maurer's shift to lamp design, culminating in the establishment of his company, initially called Design M and later renamed Ingo Maurer GmbH. Today they are still based in Munich.
Maurer's design spectrum ranged from minimalist pieces like the 1996 Broken Egg ceramic table lamp to monumental installations like a chandelier with over 3,000 silver-plated leaves in Munich's Residenztheater. Always at the forefront of lighting innovations, Maurer explored technologies such as holograms, LEDs, and OLEDs. His company not only continued producing his designs, like the iconic Bulb, but also supported emerging designers like Moritz Waldemeyer.
Ingo Maurer GmbH, as a torchbearer of Maurer's legacy, offers a range of distinctive table lamps, chandeliers, and fixtures, including timeless pieces like the infamous Bulb that started it all. For those seeking functional yet visually captivating lighting solutions, Maurer's enduring influence is evident in every product, reflecting a legacy that continues to shape the interior design landscape.
