Lara Bohinc
"Overall, my signature style is a mix of contradictions: bold yet light, graphic yet fluid, angular yet feminine."
There's irony in the fact that Lara Bohinc's design career was launched–in a sense–by convenience. While studying Industrial Design at Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts in her native Slovenia, she began to apply her studies by creating plastic jewellery. This was not so much because she was drawn to it as because it's easier–when attending trade shows–to fit rings, necklaces, and bracelets into a suitcase than it is tables and chairs. Upon earning an MA in Metalwork and Jewellery from the Royal College of Art in London, Bohinc found that her graduation projects had drawn attention from Vogue. Their editorials helped her launch her own design label for jewellery and accessories, and earned her consulting work with world-famous brands such as Montblanc, Gucci, and Cartier–a relationship that lasted for ten years. In 2016, having become one of the most acclaimed jewellery designers in the world, Bohinc launched Bohinc Studio to explore her stylistic explorations on a whole new scale with furniture and lighting. Drawing on her love of metalwork and fascination with geometric deconstruction, Bohinc began to experiment with more materials, such as marble, stone, and textiles. Soon, her furniture and lighting designs–such as 2021's Moonrise collection of lights for Brooklyn-based lighting brand Roll & Hill–would become every bit as celebrated as her previous work.
