Joris Laarman was born in1979 in the rural countryside of The Netherlands. After graduating cum laude at the renowned Design Academy Eindhoven, he established a design Lab in partnership with filmmaker Anita Star.
Founded in 2004, Joris Laarman Lab is an experimental playground created to study and shape the future. The lab employs craftsmen, scientists, and engineers to study and the many possibilities of future technology and its consequential aesthetics. The work is very diverse, from sculptural experimental furniture and innovative production processes to museum installations, film, and digital media.
Currently located in Amsterdam, the lab’s works with lighting firms like Vitra and Flos, and produces experimental works in collaboration with scientists, engineers, and craftsmen from around the world.
Joris first gained notoriety for his Reinventing Functionality project, which included functional rococo radiator, called Heatwave, that was picked up by Droogdesign and produced by Jaga. He has also contributed in articles Domus magazine and has provided guest lectures at universities around Europe, including the Architectural Association London, Rietveld Academy Amsterdam, and the Design academy Eindhoven.
The work of Joris Laarman Lab has been added to the permanent collections of many renowned international museums, including the MoMA, V&A, Centre Pompidou, and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. In 2011 Joris Laarman received an Innovator Of The Year award from the Wall Street Journal.
