Hailing from Småland, a region in southern Sweden famous for furniture production, Jonas Forsman now lives in Gothenburg, where he also runs his industrial design studio. His projects range from lighting and furniture to product design.
Jonas designs “from the inside out”, letting function and concept dictate the final shape of the product. There is often a mechanical element in each design and he challenges himself by using as few and as simple parts as possible without losing the soul of the object.
“I learnt from early age to save on resources by using as little as possible and make the most out of it” he explains. “This has become a guide line for me as a designer also. I start from the function and see if I can solve it in a new way, often by using different materials or new mechanical solutions. Then I cut away all things not necessary and let the function speak for itself. ”
The award-winning designer has worked with a number of prestigious design firms, such as a Moooi and Innermost. His style is perhaps best represented by his Parasol lamp, for Innermost.
“Soft, gentle reflected light is cradled in a very literal parasol in Jonas Forsman’s simple design, ” states Innermost’s website. “Free movement of the shade gently guides the light to its intended use. Forsman’s designs focus on the interaction between user and product, aiming to delight through refined and balance movements. ”
