Semi Flush Mount Lights
Semi-flush mount lights are often confused with suspension lights by those outside the lighting design industry, and with good reason. Semi-flush mount lights are ceiling light fixtures whose body and diffuser are separated from the ceiling by a support structure.
Some have subtle structures, as with Carapace from CTO Lighting, or Mercure from Leucos; others, such as Lee Broom's Mini Crescent and the Aballs collection from Parachilna, have larger, decorative supports. And some drop from the ceiling like suspension lights, but use rods for their drops, as with Contardi's rich Melanocetus collection and Terzani's Stream, with its divine cascades of fringe.
The Lederam family of lights from Catellani & Smith is a contemporary collection of semi-flush mount ceiling lights that uses gentle, fluid forms and reflection for its warm, embracing light. El Torrent offers a sense of rustic passion with Daya Semi, while the contrast between slender stems and bold heads lend an air of sophisticated fun to Foscarini's Twiggy Ceiling, Roll & Hill's Fiddlehead Cantilever, and Estiluz's Pluma. Stem 3X from Sklo is simple but evocative, and FontanaArte's Sillabone indulges in timelessness.
The general rule of thumb is to keep a clearance minimum of 7 feet below a fixture to ensure functional clearance. For higher ceiling clearances like vaulted or cathedral ceilings, recessed lighting and suspension lights are the best options.
