Studiopepe
"We believe in a dialectic approach. We discuss-sometimes we argue-we share ideas and suggestions. Then we carve out one idea that always starts with storytelling."
Italian design duo Studiopepe relies on–and was born out of–differences more than commonalities. Although Chiara Di Pinto and Arianna Lelli Mami first met at Politecno di Milano, they did not interact beyond smalltalk at the coffee machine. Di Pinto was rounding out her Fine Arts education with a degree in Industrial Design, while the function-and-practicality-oriented Lelli Mami studied Interior Design.
Rather, it was separate vacation trips to the same Mexican beach in 2005 that led to a chance meeting and the founding of a design, architecture, and creative direction studio that has lasted over sixteen years. Studiopepe was born of discussions between Lelli Mami and Di Pintos regarding their interests and processes, and a shared opinion that respectful disagreement and a dialectic process produces more provocative and interesting design than peaceful agreement.
Since 2006, multiple-award-winning Studiopepe has interpreted their commitment to sustainable and democratic design through furniture and lighting designs; commercial, hospitality, and residential architectural projects; and art and design installations such as their Manifesto Projects.
For these Manifesto Projects, Studiopepe draws on their work from a particular year to express and explore a concept or idea. For example, De-siderio used their 2020 projects, including the modular Unseen lighting collection for Petite Friture, to explore 'desire,' and the eternal sense of longing that "moves the soul, keeps us curious, and makes us human in our most profound inner beauty."
