Studio Formafantasma
"We're not interested in 'emotional design'--I want to puke when I hear those words--but I do think that there are qualities in materials that are powerful, and I think that it is important that we, as designers, recognize that."
It makes sense that Studio Formafantasma's approach to design is a scholarly one. Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin, Formafantasma's founders, met during their undergraduate studies in Florence, Italy, and then pursued their master's degrees in Contextual Design from Design Academy Endhoven as a duo.
In this environment, Trimarchi and Farresin cultivated a method of working with materials that persists to this day. For every Formafantasma work, they perform research into not only the material's physical properties, but also its social value, its traditional and cultural value, and its role in ecological sustainability. Then, from their Amsterdam workshop, they explore and experiment, creating works and shows that are both aesthetically and philosophically beautiful.
Although they began primarily in furniture design, at the request of Flos, Studio Formafantasma designed Wirering, their first industrially-produced work, for Euroluce 2017, and have continued explorations in light as they conceived their commissioned projects Carravagio/Bernini, Ore Streams, and, in 2020, Cambio, which focuses on wood and sustainability in its use as a material.
Their design genius and focus on sustainability led to Studio Formafantasma being named Dezeen's 2020 Studio of the Year and 2021 Designer of the Year by Wallpaper*, as well as Farresin and Trimarchi also becoming heads of the new Geo-Design master's program at their alma mater, Design Academy Eindhoven, in September 2020.
We can certainly look forward to the future with Simone Farresin and Andrea Trimarchi continuing to research, envision, design, and create it.
