Nao Tamura
“To me, communication design and industrial design are the same, because a product has to communicate with people. When I design, I always think about function and emotion. Good design has both.”
"Growing up with parents who were both designers in their own right, Nao Tamura learned early on that a design must not only compliment the living space, but also the lives lived within it.
Born and raised in Tokyo, Tamura moved to New York to study at the Parsons School of Design. After graduating with her BFA in Communication Design, Tamura joined Smart Design, a strategic design company focused on accessibility and functionality in design.
After five years learning and growing at Smart Design, Tamura chose to move on, founding Nownao Inc. in 2005. Since then, she has worked tirelessly, pursuing in every project an essential and harmonious balance of tradition and modernity, statement and silence, form and function.
In 2013, Tamura’s particular affinity for glass as a medium led to a natural collaboration with the then-new brand WonderGlass, for whom she has since created several striking lighting designs, such as the serene Flow(T), the clean and dynamic Lab Edition, the evanescent Fluid, and the achingly beautiful Momento.
Today, based out of her combination apartment and studio in Brooklyn, New York, Nao Tamura continues to bring her unique form of harmonious modernity to design shows and exhibitions around the world, earning multiple prestigious awards, such as the Red Dot Design Award and 1st prize at the Milano Salone Satellite Awards.
