Poetic, impulsive, charming, and known for the diversity of symbolism in his works, French designer Mathias knows how to mix imagination and aesthetics. From lighting to mirrors, and furniture to table decor, Mathias’ vision bestows unique qualities to exceptional objects.
Prior to his work as a lighting designer, Mathias lived and worked in Paris, where he created, produced, and sold a diversity of objects, including mirrors, furniture, perfumes, candlesticks, and even costume jewelry.
A self-taught designer and ‘créateur’, he is well known for his graceful, airy, and distinguished glass creations.
He started working with Baccarat in 1996, when the first Rencontres collection was created. This collection includes exceptional pieces made by members of Baccarat's meilleurs ouvriers de France, the exclusive title given to France's most distinguished craftsmen.
After the success of the Rencontres collection, the bond between Mathias and Baccarat grew stronger. There was no doubt that Mathias would design Baccarat’s new Mille-Nuits lighting collection. Mathias, who had lived in Syria and Turkey with his grandfather as a child, designed Mille-Nuits partly inspired by his childhood memories of a universe filled with a peculiar magic, where sparkling lights evoked the atmosphere of legends from the 1001 Tales of the Arabian Nights.
“The baroque spirit of the Mille Nuits candelabra expresses all the allure of the Orient, ” states the Baccarat website.
