Ludovica & Roberto Palomba
“Our goal is to design free projects, able to interact in an evident and immediate way with people who choose them. Our success is measured by the amount of [people] worldwide who have chosen to share their lives intimately with our products.”
“In the rarefied world of Milanese design, high-profile stars usually work alone. Partnerships between husband and wife are even scarcer, ” writes Dwell’s Arlene Hirst. Ludovica Serafini and Roberto Palomba may be the exceptions that prove the rule. ”
Acclaimed architects and designers, Ludovica and Roberto founded their Milan-based studio, Palomba Serafini Associati, in 1994. Over the past two decades, they have collaborated, as art directors and designers, with some of the most prestigious design brands across Europe and beyond, including Boffi, Cappellini, Salviati, Foscarini, and Zanotta.
Working with Foscarini, Ludovica and Roberto created the spectacular Birdie suspension lamp. Evoking the imagery of birds at rest in the canopy a tree, the Birdie is a system of lamps, where a variable number of arms with a white finish, as slender as the branches of a tree, support small white, grey, orange and amarant diffusers.
“Birdie also has another meaning, ” Roberto explains, noting the lamps simple design. “In golf it is a hole played with one stroke less than the expected number — in short, a few strokes that are well placed.
Other notable products designed for Foscarini include Tartan, the Gregg collection, and the Rituals collection.
Ludovica and Roberto have received many prestigious awards such as a Compasso D’Oro, a Red Dot Award, a Design Plus Award, a Product Innovation Award, a German Design Award, and an Elle Decoration International Design Award.
