Designer Lee Broom
“I design more from an emotional space, rather than a practical or functional space. The practicality and function come in at a later point, once I’ve got the kind of vision that I want to create.”
The essence of Lee Broom—as a designer, as a brand, and as a man—is self-expression. By drawing creatively on an intensely diverse professional history, he has made himself a unique and dynamic force in the world of lighting design.
Based in the London studio he founded in 2007, Lee Broom draws on his experiences in theatre, fashion, interior décor, and furniture design to infuse his works with an inherent sense of beauty, creativity, and showmanship. In this way, Broom’s creations become extensions of himself. This essentially personal creativity, combined with an entrepreneurial spirit, has served Broom well. As he proudly notes, he has never worked for anyone but himself, and enjoys the purity and focus that comes with having complete control over his own designs.
As a dynamic and ever-changing individual, reinvention is another core element of Lee Broom. He is known for refracting classic styles through the lens of his mind’s eye, resulting in design that embraces the known while also revealing the innovative within it.
For instance, for KALEIDOSCOPIA, his 2019 installation at the London Design Festival, using nothing more than seventeen of his own Orion lights and some mirrors, Broom created the illusion of a grand chandelier comprised of over two hundred lights, with an eternity of reflected light and shadow surrounding them.
Lee Broom has won over thirty design awards and his eponymous brand has showrooms in London and New York.
