Designer Hind Rabii
"[Being a Moroccan woman studying engineering in Belgium] prohibited me to be different, so it has become critical for me to position myself within the feminist debate and on the topic of social justice."
When future lighting designer Hind Rabii began to research designer lighting in the mid-'90s, it was because she simply wanted the best for her own home. What she found, however, just didn't feel quite right. For a woman and feminist who had defined her architecture and design career through unique combinations of her Belgian training with her Moroccan origins, the luminaires she found available simply did not reflect Rabii, her style, choices, or life. Her solution was not only sensible, it was inspiring: she commissioned custom lighting designs of her own. Building on a fascination with light that began with the way it filtered through luxurious Moroccan fabrics, Hind Rabii applied her knowledge and education from Institut Supérieur Industriel to her passion. This led her to the world of lighting design and the start of her own designer lighting brand: HIND RABII Lighting Studio. From her eponymous brand, Rabii considers and expresses her views on feminism, culture, social issues, and sustainability through aesthetics and engineering in every luminaire she designs. Hind Rabii creates these expressions in her lighting design based on the intimacy and poetry found in the materials she uses. Wood, copper, silver, gold, and marble–sustainably sourced in the finest quality, of course–combine with Murano glass and Veneto ceramics in Rabii's hands to serve as the vocabulary of her designer lighting statements.
