Eloy Puig
“The environment is essential. The environment is what gives us inspiration. What I perceive in this environment is what I like to capture in my designs.”
In the northeast of Spain, in the heart of Catalonia, is a village called Mieres. Eloy Puig calls it home.
For Puig, home is more than just a place of origin, more than just a place to live. Eloy Puig draws his vision, his inspiration, and his strength from his home. That is why Puig and his partner, Montse Barbena, founded their studio, El Torrent, in Mieres in 1997, and have remained there since.
The love Eloy Puig feels for Mieres and the Catalanian countryside is the foundation of all his designs. Light is not an end in itself for Puig: it is a means of expressing emotion, of communicating feeling--something he learned from watching, in his youth, the light as it changed over the hills through the day.
Eloy Puig starts with what he sees, then recreates it through the lens of his own view and feelings. The warm and intricate Koord began when Puig saw light filtered through the seat of a cord seat on a veranda in the afternoon sun. From there, Puig began experimenting with materials and arrangements until he had created what would become the Koord series. By winding braided acrylic cord over a steel frame, Eloy Puig reinvented old-world craftwork in a fun, modern style.
Resisting suggestions to move El Torrent or outsource production to increase profits, Eloy Puig continues to create designs in the land that he loves, with each design lovingly handcrafted in the in-house workshop of the small family business he helped create.
