“When we meet clients with strong personal ideas about their life, we are able to be even more creative, and the result of the project becomes both more personal and characteristic at the same time.” — Ola Rune
Claesson Koivisto Rune is a Swedish architectural partnership, founded in Stockholm in 1995 by Mårten Claesson, Eero Koivisto, and Ola Rune. It started as an architectural firm, but has since become an internationally-acclaimed, multi-disciplinary office with an equal emphasis on both architecture and design. Project categories include buildings, hotels, homes, shops, offices, exhibitions, kitchens, sanitary ware, tableware, glassware, furniture, textiles, tiles, lighting, electronics, candy, and even a trophy (the Swedish TV-prize Kristallen).
“Claesson Koivisto Rune infuses its pared-back aesthetic with warmth, lightness and a bit of good humor, all of which are on display in this home in Stockholm, ” writes Stephen Heyman in the New York Times.
“The firm has since designed everything from USB flash drives to the Swedish ambassador’s residence in Berlin. In every case, they pursue the functionalism associated with much of Scandinavian design, but manage to infuse it with wit and good cheer. One of their recent series of upholstered chairs, made for the Italian brand Arflex, has armrests angled upward and outward, as if reaching out for an embrace; it’s called Hug. ”
The studio’s projects stretch to all the major continents of the world. As the first Swedish office to have exhibited in the international section at the Venice Architecture Biennale, in 2004, they are also responsible for award-winning projects such as the Tind Prefab house collection for Fiskarhedenvillan, Widlund House on Öland, Örsta Gallery building in Kumla, Sfera Building culture house in Kyotom, and Nobis Hotel in Stockholm.
Claesson Koivisto Rune has designed products for more than 80 international manufacturing companies. They have received more than 60 awards, including the Designer of the Year and the Best Seating 2014 by Elle Décor Italia, Designer of the Year 2011 and Furniture of the Year 2012 by Elle Deco (Sweden), Chicago Athenaeum International Architecture Award, German Design Award (Gold and Silver) 2011 by the Federal Republic of Germany, Good Design Award USA, IF Product Design Award, Good Design Award Japan, Design S and the Red Dot Design Award – Best of the Best 2014, making them the first office to hold a Red Dot in five different product categories.
