Bertjan Pot
"The key to the lamp is that it provides light beautifully."
Designer Bertjan Pot was born 1975 in Nieuwleusen, in The Netherlands. Today, he lives in Rotterdam. He graduated from Man and Identity at the Design Academy Eindhoven in 1998.
Bertjan is best known for the Random Light, produced by Moooi. The light started as a material experiment, which is basically the start of each product created by Studio Bertjan Pot. The outcome is usually an interior product showing a fascination for techniques, structures, patterns, and colors.
“Hugely dramatic, light as a feather and distinctly Dutch, the Random Light by Bertjan Pot began as a modernist craft project of sorts, ” explains the Design Within Reach website. “After making attempts at knitting fiberglass as a means of creating structure, Pot turned to coiling epoxy-dipped fiberglass around a large balloon in varying patterns. Once the balloon was popped, the dramatic globe shape remained, becoming a buoyant pendant lamp for an entryway, dining room or lounge area. ”
Most experiments start quite impulsively by a certain curiosity for how things would function or how something would look. From there, Bertjan takes on challenges with manufacturers to explore possibilities and push boundaries. The reward for each challenge is a new one. Studio Bertjan Pot works with manufacturers such as Arco, Established & Sons, Feld, Gelderland, Montis, Moooi, and Richard Lampert.
Bertjan’s work has received several major international design awards, and his work has been included in a number of permanent museum collections, including the MOMA New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
