“It is quite difficult to find a good producer these days that would want to develop your ideas, so we decided to use our experience and develop them by ourselves under a new label.” — Gorazd Mala?i?
Founded by Slovene Gorazd Mala?i? in 1999, Asobi is a creative consultancy specializing in product design and brand development. The company made its acclaimed debut in 2005 at the London Design Festival with a prototype of the stunning Isle Lounge sofa.
In 2011, Asobi presented its new furniture and lighting label, Tokio, with the debut of the Carbon Light at the Qubique Design Fair in Berlin. A stunning beauty powered by the latest technology, the Carbon Light is a high-performing modular suspension light made using the latest LED technology.
Tokio’s products are distinguished by clean, simple lines, and always a playful touch. Using a variety of materials, Tokio aims to build a diverse collection of design pieces for both the contract and residential markets.
Tokio prides itself on being a new design brand with a contemporary vision free of the cumbersome weight of heritage and tradition that might cloud its stylistic judgment and ultimate design output. The result is a futuristic take on smart home objects that push back against the rigid confines of what is seen as trendy or simply of the moment in today’s contemporary design landscape.
Romance and futuristic adventures are central to the brand’s anthem, and it is with those goals and values in mind that every product is envisaged and executed.
In 2006, Asobi received the Design Distinction (Silver) Award in I. D. Magazine’s 52nd Annual Design Review for their fluid, futuristic Gwig LED luminaries. The Carbon Light was a finalist for Architizer A+ Awards in 2014.
