Antonio Citterio
"National identity doesn’t exist, only a niche identity within the global market."
Antonio Citterio was born in the Italian city of Meda in 1950. He graduated in architecture from the Politecnico di Milano and opened his own studio in 1972, focusing mainly on industrial design.
Between 1987 and 1996 he worked in association with Terry Dwan, with whom he designed a number of buildings in Europe and Japan.
In 1999, Antonio and Patricia Viel formed 'Antonio Citterio and Partners' as a multidisciplinary office for architecture, industrial design, and graphics. The firm develops projects for residential and commercial complexes and industrial facilities, plans the restructuring and conservation of public buildings, and produces interior designs for work areas, offices, showrooms, and hotels. The office has participated in numerous national and international design competitions, and has been awarded with several prizes. In September 2009, the office changed its name to Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel and Partners.
Antonio currently works in the industrial design sector with Italian and foreign companies such as Ansorg, Arclinea, Axor-Hansgrohe, B&B Italia, Flexform, Flos, Fusital, Hermès, Iittala, Kartell, Maxalto, Sanitec Group, Technogym, Tre Più, and Vitra.
In 1987 and in 1994, Antonio was awarded the Compasso d’Oro-ADI. Since 2006, he has worked as a professor of Architectural Design at the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture in Switzerland. In 2008, he was honoured by the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce of London, receiving the prestigious title of Royal Designer for Industry. He is also a member of the Italian Design Council, which was established by the Italian Ministry for Culture.
