Warm, Functional, and Glare-Free: Scandinavian Design at Its Best

Scandinavian design is often associated with function-forward simplicity and natural materials that make it timeless. But at its core, it's also a response to something very practical: darkness.

When asked what reminds him most of home, LightForm photographer and videographer Hampus Danielsson, a Swedish transplant now based in Vancouver, didn't hesitate:

"Darkness reminds me of home. No joke. Sometimes, it gets dark by 2pm, so we take our lighting very seriously."

That relationship with darkness has shaped the culture and its approach to living. It has influenced an entire design philosophy embodied in comfort, functionality, and a high standard of wellbeing. In Sweden, there's a concept called lagom, a word that roughly translates to "just the right amount." Not too much. Not too little. Just enough.

You can see this idea reflected throughout Scandinavian lighting design. Rather than overpowering a room with excessive brightness or unnecessary ornamentation, the Scandinavian sensibility tends to focus on balance. Atmosphere is created through warm illumination and thoughtful proportions. Every detail is considered. Light should be warm but functional. The overall space should be beautiful, but without the excess.
