Celebrating 2020's Design Award Winners
We invite you to join us as we look back at some of the best and brightest luminaires that were honoured with awards in 2020:
NEO from Nemo
Wallpaper* Design Award
Neo from Nemo
The Wallpaper* Design Awards celebrate excellence in all aspects of design. Bernard Osann's casually minimalist NEO earned its award as a celebration of simplicity: a narrow and gently angled steel bar leans against the wall before angling away again. This Nemo design adds a sense of effortless style to any space.
Coax from Roll & Hill
Wallpaper* Design Award
Coax 03 linear suspension light from Roll & Hill
Roll & Hill's Coax collection, designed by John Hogan, seems to float in space with each transparent cylindrical glass shade drawing echoes out of the central lighting element. For its excellence in style, material, and presence, it was honoured with a Wallpaper* Design Award.
ChainDelier from Davide Groppi
German Design Award - Excellent Product Design - Lighting
ChainDelier by and from Davide Groppi
As simple or complex as you desire, Davide Groppi's ChainDelier is at once opulent and minimalist. Designed by the master himself, ChainDelier earned a German Design Award for being truly groundbreaking, as well as aesthetically, conceptually, and sustainably excellent. ChainDelier is endlessly customizable through the addition of additional chains and lighting elements, making it a magnificent yet understated addition to any space.
Alfi Suspension from Estiluz
NYCxDesign Award - Architectural Lighting
Alfi 8 Light Curve Suspension from Estiluz
Pins in a tailor's bespoke design served as the inspiration for the Alfi collection from Estiluz. The NYCxDesign Awards, presented by Interior Design and ICFF, which celebrate the best and brightest contributions to the design world from design hub New York City, named Design studio Estudi{H}ac's wonderfully playful yet dignified suspension design the winner in its category of Architectural Design.
Big One from Brokis
DESIGN PLUS powered by Light + Building Award
Big One pendant light from Brokis
Brokis' trademark handmade blown glass, combined with sustainable production methods, low-energy LED technology, and designer Lucie Koldova's ability to capture poetry in physical form are what earned Big One the DESIGN PLUS award powered by Light + Building. Every year, this competition honours "innovative products which meet the highest standards of design, ease of use, sustainability and technical quality."
État-des-Lieux from Studio d'Armes
Archiproducts Design Award
The 1A and 2A variants of État-des-Lieux from Studio d'Armes
The Archiproducts Design Awards recognize excellence in creativity, technology, and research. Alexandre Joncas' État-des-Lieux, from Canadian Studio d'Armes, earned a 2020 award not only because of its unique wide conductive support cable and extreme versatility, but because of its effortless and clean appearance, which was inspired by the Laurentian mountains and their reflection in nearby waters.
Tobia from Foscarini
Interior Design Best of Year Award - Floor Lamp
Tobia from Foscarini
Essentially simple yet radiating character, it's no surprise that Tobia by Ferruccio Laviani earned Foscarini an Interior Design Best of Year Award. Slender, lightweight, and convenient to move and position, Tobia is every bit as functional as it is assertive in its presence and form.
Noctambule from Flos
AZ Award & People's Choice - Lighting
ELLE Deco International Design Award - Lighting
One of the availableNoctambule S1 variants from Flos
Noctambule, translated as "nightwalker" from the French, is transparent and an appealing design object by day. By night, however, this collection designed by Konstantin Grcic comes to life, basking its surroundings in a distinctive glow. The endless possibilities represented by the customizable modules that comprise this collection earned Flos both the AZ Award & People's Choice Award from Azure Magazine as well as the EDIDA for Lighting.
Dew from SkLO
German Design Award - Excellent Product Design - Lighting
Dew pendant light from SkLO
Dew continues the exploration and appreciation of glass as a medium from SkLO (named for the Czech word for "glass"). Molten layers of glass are folded together to create the appearance of fluidity, playing with the common myth that glass itself is a liquid (it is, technically speaking, an "amorphous solid"). SkLO won a German Design Award for this breathtaking and innovative design.
Ilo from Oluce
German Design Award - Excellent Product Design - Lighting
Ilo Suspension light from Oluce
David Lopez Quincoce's Ilo collection from Oluce is simple yet striking. Noted for its elegance and quality by the German Design Awards, it features a narrow LED strip nestled in an aluminum bar. What truly elevates Ilo though (aside from the wires that hold the horizontal and vertical suspension variants to the ceiling *rimshot*), is the consideration and care of the engineering and styling. Ilo's two-toned aluminum finish and sleek precision machining are sublime.
Coordinates from Flos
Architects Newspaper Award - Best of Products
Interior Design Best of Year - Honoree
Coordinates S1 suspension light from Flos
Subtlety and quiet confidence mark the Coordinates collection by Michael Anastassiades. The Architects Newspaper Awards particularly noted that this eminently-customizable collection is quiet enough to accent interiors without overwhelming them, but intricate enough to still contribute to the overall atmosphere.
