Marc Sadler

“Marc Sadler is a true industrial design. ” states CompoMobili’s Virginio Briatore. “For forty years he's been working in the service of industry, transferring his technical knowledge from one field to another and performing that cross fertilization many people talk about, but few succeed in doing. ”

A French citizen born in Austria, Marc first began to experiment with plastics as a student at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. In the early 1970s, Marc perfected the first ski-boot made from completely recyclable thermoplastic material. The product marked the beginning of Marc’s specialisation as a sports designer, which led to close collaboration with some of the most important multinational sport companies in the United States, Asia, and Europe.  

Today, based in Milan, he applies his expert knowledge of materials to his work as a designer of home furnishings, household appliances, lighting, and sports equipment.

Working with Foscarini, Marc has designed a number of famous lighting fixtures, including Twiggy, Drop, Tite, and Mite. Exemplifying his unique creative philosophy, Marc describes the iconic Twiggy lamp as a ‘no design’ piece:

“Basically, Twiggy is nothing more than a conical diffuser trunk, a rod, and a support disc, ” he says. “But it is the fusion of these three elements that creates the magic of this ‘no design’ object with its highly individual personality. ”  

Marc also designed a motorcyclist’s back protector for the design company Dainese, which is now housed in the permanent collection of design at the Museum Of Modern Art in New York. Mite is included in the design collection of the Beaubourg in Paris.

Marc has been awarded the Compasso d’Oro — Italy’s top design award — an incredible 4 times.
