“I think it’s a really interesting time for American design, because for so long we have been associated with an endless amount of consumer products that are research driven, but the "emerging American design movement" involves us taking influence from European design culture—almost like Art vs Science, and they are very different styles.”
Chris Hardy is an American industrial designer based in Atlanta. Born in 1984, he pursued an education of design, receiving a BFA from the College for Creative Studies and a Masters of Design from the School of Design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. After returning to the United States in 2009 he began his career as a freelance designer collaborating with international brands.
Chris made his furniture design debut at Salone del Mobile in Milan in 2011 with his Wig lamp, built in partnership with the iconic Italian brand FontanaArte. “My intent for the Wig lamp was to create a design based on the idea of a culture, ” he explains. “I wanted to take the concept of something intangible and visualize it through form. I was drawn to the idea of creating a single mass composed from smaller elements. It was important that the design have a lot of character and personality. ”
He is also known for his Chinese-inspired furniture pieces, including the Status chair, is based on a prevalent aspect of Chinese society known as “face, " putting importance on an outward representation that does not necessarily reflect the truth.
