"I think our responsibility is to use design for more than just the next nice chair.”
Born in the United Kingdom in 1984, Benjamin Hubert graduated from Industrial Design and Technology at Loughborough University in 2006. He founded an independent studio in London in 2007, where he designed furniture and lighting for prestigious brands such as Fabbian, Moroso, Ligne Roset, and Menu.
In 2015, after winning several international design awards, Benjamin relaunched his studio under the name Layer, as a part of a shift towards more ‘human-focused’ projects.
“Layer is a strategic industrial design agency. From app design and the next generation of wearables to smart domestic appliances, fast moving consumer goods, and intelligent furniture systems, we create products that meet the demands of tomorrow today, ” states the studio’s website.
“We cut through the world’s visual noise by eliminating what’s unnecessary and identifying the essential. ”
Layer has produced a number of cutting edge designs, including the world’s first 3D-printed wheelchair, and a series of ergonomic and ‘smart’ wearables. Take, for example, The Worldbeing — produced by The Carbon Trust, the product is a self-directed wearable and app that tracks carbon usage, empowering consumers to make better decisions and driving real change.
"What we want to do is a bit more democratic, a little bit more accessible, and something that is tapping into what people need, not just what they want, ” Benjamin explains.
Layer is currently working with “forward-thinking brands” from around the world, including Aesop, BMW, Braun, Cappellini, Maggie’s, Nike, Oral-B, Panasonic, and Samsung.
